Adding wireless transmitters to a hardwired system

In the years past, hardwired Home Alarm Systems were most commonly installed mainly because people were not comfortable with wireless, simply because wireless was so susceptible to interference, so because of that, a lot of people had to deal with just protecting areas where they could get a wire to in their homes and businesses. Well, these days wireless capabilities have came along way and are ever bit as reliable as hardwired, but the problem is, you’ve got a perfectly good alarm system, so why replace it, right?

That is why Alarm companies have came up with wireless expansion modules. A wireless expansion module can more than likely be added to your existing Alarm System, thus allowing you to expand your protection level along with other convenience options such as using a “Keyfob” to arm/disarm your Alarm System remotely, some even have a panic button.

Maybe you’ve added a room onto your house, and would like to have it protected, or that detached garage where all your expensive tools are kept. Or, here’s a popular one, believe it or not, your teenage kid has started sneaking out at night and you want something on his or her window that’s going to warn you…. the list goes on and on.

The fact is, anybody that hasĀ  ever installed or had installed a Home Alarm System knows that there is at least one place that you would have liked to had protected, but realized getting a wire to the location was either extremely hard or flat outĀ  impossible, That is where having wireless capability using a wireless expansion module really pays off.

Self monitor alarms via your cell phone

The Dock N Talk is a cell phone dialer module that is made in the U.S.A. and will allow you to self monitor your alarm system via your own cell phone without the need for a land line telephone.
How it works is the bluetooth module links to you cellular phone (bluetooth capable of course) and provides a dial tone that can be ran directly to your Home Alarm System or even to your incoming telephone line allowing you to take advantage of all of your phone jacks in your home or office.

Even though the Dock N Talk does provide a dial tone for your Home Alarm System to call out on, keep in mind that it CANNOT be used to communicate with a central station monitoring company, it is only for self monitoring. So if you want to “self” monitor your Home Alarm System, and have no landline telephone service or want the security of a cell based communication method, then you should definitely consider the Dock N Talk. It’s a piece of cake to hook up and is pretty much plug and play.

Home Alarm System Sirens, Speakers, and drivers

Most every Home Alarm System on the market today has a noise maker either for scaring off an intruder or waking us up and warning us in the event of a fire or burglary, unless it’s purpose is to silently report to a central monitoring station. Some need a siren, which just requires power to make sound such as an Elk 150RT 30W. The DSC Home Alarm Systems are a good example of a system that will push a siren. A siren is nothing more than a driven speaker.

Then there are some systems that require a speaker such as the Elk 1RT, because the driver is already built in to the Home Alarm Systems main panel. GE Security Home Alarm Systems are a good example of a system that has a built in siren driver.

But sometimes people would like to use their existing speaker with a system that would normally require a siren. This is when you would need a Siren Driver, such as the DSC SDM-100, Elk110 or the Elk120.The DSC SDM-100 is a two tone siren driver that will sound either a steady siren or a yelp siren. The Elk 110 is a voice siren driver that has pre- recorded voice messages that will be heard when the Home Alarm System is tripped. The Elk120 is a recordable voice siren driver that allows you to record a message that will be heard when the Home Alarm System is tripped.
